Generation Blues Experience – Private Angel

Generation Blues Experience – Private Angel
R. Music, Inc.
To say blues music has transcended several generations is an understatement, and perhaps nowhere is that understatement more exemplified in highly entertaining fashion then with the aptly titled Generation Blues Experience. Veteran blues masters Sammy Lee and Jamie Powell are in their 70’s and 80’s respectively while axe-slinger/vocalist Ray Goren is a mere 14 years old. Ray’s maturity at such a young age is stunning at times, especially present on his emotion dripping vocals on the title track. Powell’s age has not affected his vocal power at all, as “Crazy” will blow you away with its blistering edge. Sammy pours a searingly soulful inflection into the New Orleans tribute “Katrina.” Throughout the eight tracks, Ray is absolutely on fire with the six string, perhaps one of the hottest new guitarists out there. The music is altogether incredible, with a host of veteran players lending their prodigious chops and also their songwriting prowess, as all tracks except the CD ender – a positively smoking version of the Bill Withers classic “Ain’t No Sunshine” – are original compositions. It would probably be to cliche to call this act a “torch passer” considering the age gulf, but it is what it is; damn good blues and a comfort factor of knowing that one of America’s most enduring forms of indigenous music is not going away any time soon. – MW
